Background of the Study

Nomadic pastoralism is a traditional livelihood practice in Nigeria, particularly among ethnic groups in northern states like Kebbi, where it has sustained communities for generations. In Birnin Kebbi Local Government Area, pastoralists depend on vast stretches of land for grazing their livestock. However, in recent decades, climate change has posed significant challenges to this age-old practice. The gradual shift in weather patterns, including prolonged droughts, erratic rainfall, and increased temperatures, has led to a reduction in the availability of grazing land and water resources (Kamal & Nuhu, 2023). This climate-induced pressure has intensified competition for land, escalating conflicts between farmers and pastoralists and threatening food security in the region. Moreover, the frequency of climate-related disasters, such as flooding and desertification, has further compounded the vulnerability of nomadic pastoralists, making it difficult to sustain their livelihoods. This study will investigate the specific impacts of climate change on nomadic pastoralism in Birnin Kebbi, with an emphasis on the challenges of grazing land degradation, water scarcity, and socio-economic consequences for pastoralist communities.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Nomadic pastoralists in Birnin Kebbi are facing increased environmental stressors due to climate change, which threatens the viability of pastoralism as a sustainable livelihood. The depletion of pasture and water resources, coupled with conflicts over land use, has created a precarious situation for these communities. Climate change impacts have intensified the difficulties already faced by pastoralists, leading to reduced herd sizes, economic loss, and increased migration patterns. This study aims to assess how climate change has altered nomadic pastoralism in Birnin Kebbi and propose recommendations for adaptation and resilience-building.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

• To assess the impacts of climate change on grazing land and water resources for nomadic pastoralists in Birnin Kebbi.

• To examine the socio-economic consequences of climate change on pastoralist livelihoods in the region.

• To identify potential adaptation strategies for nomadic pastoralists in response to climate change in Birnin Kebbi.

1.4 Research Questions

• How has climate change affected grazing land availability and water resources for pastoralists in Birnin Kebbi?

• What socio-economic challenges have nomadic pastoralists in Birnin Kebbi faced due to climate change?

• What adaptive strategies can be implemented to help pastoralists cope with the impacts of climate change in Birnin Kebbi?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

• H1: Climate change has significantly reduced the availability of grazing land and water resources for pastoralists in Birnin Kebbi.

• H2: Climate change has led to economic losses and livelihood vulnerabilities among nomadic pastoralists in Birnin Kebbi.

• H3: Adaptation strategies, such as alternative grazing systems and water conservation techniques, can enhance the resilience of nomadic pastoralists to climate change.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The study is significant because it provides critical insights into the impacts of climate change on one of the most vulnerable sectors of Nigerian society—nomadic pastoralism (Kamal & Nuhu, 2023). Understanding these impacts is crucial for developing targeted policies and interventions to safeguard pastoralist communities and promote sustainable livelihoods. By assessing the socio-economic challenges and potential adaptive responses, this study will provide valuable information for local government authorities, environmental agencies, and NGOs involved in climate change adaptation and rural development.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on Birnin Kebbi Local Government Area, with a specific emphasis on the impacts of climate change on nomadic pastoralism. It will assess the availability of grazing lands, water resources, and the socio-economic well-being of pastoralists. The study is limited to the examination of the climate change impacts on pastoralism and will not cover other forms of agriculture or the broader environmental issues in Kebbi State. Limitations include challenges in obtaining detailed climate data and the potential for biases in self-reported community experiences.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

• Nomadic Pastoralism: A system of livestock farming where herders move with their animals from one place to another in search of grazing land and water.

• Climate Change: Long-term changes in temperature, precipitation, and other atmospheric conditions that affect the environment and ecosystems.

• Adaptation Strategies: Measures taken to adjust to the impacts of climate change, such as changing grazing routes, water conservation, and alternative livestock management practices.
